Conquering the Cuernos de Negros: A Team Bohol Eagles Adventure on Mount Talinis

The call of adventure echoed through the Bohol Eagles Mountaineering Society (BEMS), led by the ever-inspiring Pastor Robert T. Rio. This time, our sights were set on the majestic Mount Talinis, the crown jewel of the Cuernos de Negros mountain range in Negros Oriental. Our journey began in Bohol, where we boarded the Oceanjet ferry to Dumaguete City, the bustling gateway to Negros Oriental. From there, we embarked on a road trip to Valencia, the quaint town that would serve as our jump-off point for the challenging trek.

For three thrilling nights and four unforgettable days, we traversed the Valencia Apolong Trail, a testament to the raw beauty and untamed wilderness of Mount Talinis. The jungle track presented a formidable challenge – a labyrinth of tree roots, loose rocks, and treacherous mud. The ever-present threat of leeches added another layer of adventure (or perhaps annoyance) to our expedition. But our spirits remained high, fueled by camaraderie and the breathtaking scenery that unfolded with every step.

One of the highlights of the trek was a visit to the Twin Falls, a cascading display of nature’s power and serenity. However, the trail also held an unexpected surprise – a pungent sulfur vent that spewed forth from the earth, staining the nearby river and creating an eerily barren zone. This stark reminder of Mount Talinis’ volcanic nature added a unique dimension to our experience.

The challenges we faced on the Valencia Apolong Trail were numerous, but the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit of Mount Talinis was unparalleled. The views from the top were nothing short of spectacular, a panoramic tapestry of verdant valleys, rugged mountains, and the distant shimmer of the sea. It was a moment of pure elation, a testament to the strength of our team spirit and our unwavering determination.

This trek on Mount Talinis was more than just a climb; it was a journey of self-discovery, camaraderie, and awe-inspiring beauty. It cemented the bond within the BEMS family and left us with memories that will forever be etched in our hearts.
